There is no event in our history more central to who we are, or more defined us as a people. Nothing can match it for sheer drama, emotion and impact. Its story is one of idealism, passion, heartbreak, sacrifice, heroism, and families divided. It is one that brought to the forefront men of diverse and great character, and left behind others who stumbled or acted on evil impulses. Abraham Lincoln saw the sweep of the event, saying in 1862, “We cannot escape history…we will be remembered in spite of ourselves. No personal significance, or insignificance, can spare one or another of us. The fiery trial through which we pass will light us down, in honor or dishonor, to the latest generation.”
